How to Change the Water Filter on a Whirlpool Refrigerator? Step by Step Guide

Filter Type 1 – Filter In the Base Grille

Some whirlpool refrigerators have their water filter installed in the base grille. In order to replace such water filters, here is the step by step guidance to follow.

  1. First locate the water filter inside the refrigerator or in the base grille.
  2. Lift the door of the filter up.
  3. Now, pull the filter out and if it becomes a little difficult then push it first. Discard this old filter.
  4. Open the new filter. Remove the protective coverings from the O-rings but make sure you keep the o-rings in place even after removing the covering.
  5. Insert the new filter into the slot again and if it doesn’t go inside, easily rotate it a little until the notches are properly aligned with grooves but do not force the water filter. Also ensure the arrow on the water filter is pointing upward.
  6. After inserting, push the filter door close so it fits into its place.
  7. Once your water filter gets replaced, now flush the water filter for proper working.

Filter Type 2 – Filter Inside the Refrigerator at Upper Right-Hand Corner

In some models of whirlpool, filters are placed inside the refrigerator at upper right-hand corner. Here is the step by step guidance which you can follow for replacing the filter for both filter type 2.

  1. First locate the water filter inside the refrigerator at the upper right-hand corner.
  2. To get the filter release, push the eject button on it.
  3. Discard the filter after it gets released.
  4. Open the new filter. Remove the protective coverings from the O-rings but make sure you keep the o-rings in place even after removing the covering.
  5. Now, Place the filter cap on the new cartridge so the ridges get aligned. To snap and lock into place, turn the cap clockwise.
  6. Insert the new filter into the slot and ensure the arrow is pointing to the left.
  7. Keep pushing the filter in until it gets fit properly and the eject button pops out to the original place.
  8. Once your water filter gets replaced, now flush the water filter for proper working.

Filter Type 3 – Filter at Left Side of the Refrigerator’s Base Grille

When filters are placed at the left side of the refrigerator’s base grille. Here is the step by step guidance which you can follow for replacing the filter for both filter type 3.

  1. First locate the water filter inside the refrigerator at the upper right-hand corner.
  2. To get the filter release, push the eject button on it.
  3. Discard the filter after it gets released.
  4. Open the new filter. Remove the protective coverings from the O-rings but make sure you keep the o-rings in place even after removing the covering.
  5. Now, Place the filter cap on the new cartridge so the ridges get aligned. To snap and lock into place, turn the can clockwise.
  6. Insert the new filter into the slot and ensure the arrow is pointing to the left.

Filter Type 4 – Filter at the Upper Right-Hand Corner of Your Refrigerator Interior

For the refrigerator in which water filters are placed at the upper right hand corner of your refrigerator interior. Here is the step by step guidance that you can follow for replacing filters.

  1. Locate the water filter at the upper right hand corner of your refrigerator’s interior.
  2. To open the cover on a small lever, if the tab in your refrigerator has a face outward then push on it by pulling the cover down. Similarly, if the tab is on the bottom of the cover then pull forward.
  3. Remove the filter by turning to lift and pull. Discard the old filter.
  4. Insert the new filter into the slot and push it in by turning right slightly to line it up with grooves.
    Note: if you’re installing for the first time, you will find a cap inside the slot. You can pull it out by turning counterclockwise.
  5. Push on the filter to lock on its place and push the filter door up so that it snaps closed.
  6. Once your water filter gets replaced, now flush the water filter for proper working.
